Juliana
a Nun
Age:
20s
Psalm 48: They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.
Themes:
Trust and betrayal, theology, mysticism
You thought that monastic life would be for you, but now you are not so sure. God calls loudly to you, but perhaps the abbey is keeping you from Him?
Your family was the wealthiest in your Lincolnshire town. Your father sold wool to the Low Countries (at least in times of peace) and your mother brought a substantial dowry of her own. You grew up very comfortably, always wearing fine gowns and eating the best food. When you were very young, you thought everyone else in the world led the same life, and that all was comfort and happiness under God. Age taught you better.
The townsfolk around you made their money at sea - sailing out down the river from town to bring back fish to feed themselves and trade inland. But as you were growing up, the river channel slowly silted up until ships could no longer put out. This mattered little to your father - a small drop in profits as he shipped his wool further down the coast - but to the poorer folk in town it was death. People grew destitute, families turned to begging, and then the sweating sickness came to town and carried off the weak and suffering. Your family of course was untouched.
Role:
Where they hold no named role within the community, the first and greatest role of the nuns is to pray and sing the psalms. Beyond this, they are required simply to be holy in your behaviour and to keep the Rule.
Connections:
Dorothy, the cellaress
Your cousin Dorothy (on your mother’s side) is the reason you came to this house rather than any other, and you hoped she would be an Older Sister to lead you in the ways of Christ. He seems not to be often on her mind though, which is more usually filled with thoughts of casks of butter, or sides of beef. If only you could find time to ask her how she can spend shillings on sea-fish rather than carp from your pond - and the savings could go to the poor!
Margery, a Nun
Secrets:
You have Lutheran leanings
You have not had much access to the new ideas coming out of the Empire in recent years, but what you have heard intrigues you. A poorer Church, divested of wealth to aid the poor is surely closer to God? If only you could find out more about what these Lutherans believe, you would be able to find out if they offered a better path to God than the one you have.
