Bess
the Novice Mistress
Age:
late 30s - late 40s
Psalm 32: I shall give understanding to thee, and I shall teach thee; in this way in which thou shalt go, I shall make steadfast mine eyes on thee.
Themes:
Leadership; enforcing discipline; consensual sexual contact with women (past)
It was many years ago that you arrived at Whitwood, a happy postulant eager to live the religious life, which felt to you like your calling. Your novitiate, however, was not the happiest.
When you became a novice, Joan, the current Abbess, was still Novice Mistress. Joan was a kindly and indulgent Novice Mistress, and you thought she was weak. You believed firmly in the Rule and strove at all times to embody it in every moment of your life. Your fellow novices, however, were frequently lax, ill-disciplined, and lazy. Joan never seemed particularly interested in correcting them, certainly not with the firmness required, and you always felt like they were allowed to let you and Whitwood down. Several of the novices from that time never took their vows, failing at some stage in their training and returning to secular life. Even the sister who did get through—Phillippa—has always, in your view, lacked the proper discipline to be a nun, being distracted instead by the minutiae of the physical world and the secular parts of her duties. When you had the chance to become Novice Mistress, you eagerly took it—determined to be a better example to the young sisters than Joan was in her time.
You are a great lover of order and discipline, which you see as the foundation of society. You are not by any means cold-hearted and have a great deal of time for your fellow Sisters, whatever their seniority, but you take the Rule very seriously and are genuine in your desire to teach good behaviour to the Novices in your care. You are a firm believer in “A rod and chastising shall give wisdom; but a child, that is left to his own will, shameth his mother.” (Proverbs 29:15), and you get very frustrated when other Sisters intervene to allow Novices to get away with breaches of the Rule.
Role:
The Novice Mistress is a nun in charge of the community’s novices. You train and care for them, and correct them if they err, subject to the greater authority of the Prioress in grave disciplinary matters. You have the power to order any penance within the Rule and the law for the novices and postulants unless you think the matter is too serious to deal with yourself. In those cases, you should pass the offending novice on to the Prioress.
When a professed nun transfers to a new abbey, it is customary for the incoming nun to go through a period of supervision with the receiving abbey’s novice mistress, even though she has already professed her vows.
Connections:
Blanche, a nun
When Blanche was transferred here from Syon, you had every intention to carry out the customary period of supervision for a transferred nun. You had done this for Agnes, now the Sacrista, some years ago, and it seemed to really help her settle in. Indeed, as soon as you met Blanche you knew this period would be vital for her - she seemed wilful and unhappy, and you intended to set those things right. Phillippa however told you in no uncertain terms that Blanche would not need any extra supervision. You don’t like that Phillippa overruled you, and are frustrated that she won’t tell you why she did it. You also have your eye firmly on Blanche.
Phillippa, the Treasuress
Secrets:
You used to be in a romantic relationship with Maud
Shortly before you arrived at Whitwood, another nun had come to join the Abbey—Maud. As junior sisters, the two of you developed a close and mutually supportive relationship. Unable to sleep at night for thoughts of Maud, one evening, you sneaked out of your bed to quietly wake her. You were terrified that Maud would reject you or report you to Joan, but Maud seemed pleased to see you, and the pair of you crept to the Abbey gardens where you shared kisses and deep conversation almost until the sun rose. For several years, your relationship flowered, until one evening Ellen walked in on you. You did not think Ellen was the sort of person to say anything about it, and hoped to simply brush the incident under the rug, but Maud seemed absolutely terrified by the discovery. Despite your tears, protestations, and eventual begging, Maud insisted on ending the relationship. You have never truly been able to put aside your feelings for Maud—both those raised by Maud’s brutal ending of your relationship and your intense memories of the closeness you shared. It does not help that you have now noticed Maud spending ever more time in the company of Alice…
